About FDRS

The Fat Disorders Research Society is a National Organization dedicated to the research of life changing disorders affecting almost surely someone you know and love.

The Fat Disorders Research Society, Inc. is a newly-formed 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization incorporated in the State of Wisconsin. Our tax ID number is 26-4545388. The Fat Disorders Research Fat-Disorders-Research-Logo-DewSociety, Inc. is dedicated to spreading awareness and raising funds for research of Dercum’s Disease and the other rare disorders related to abnormal distribution of fat.

The Fat Disorders Research Society, Inc. exists to educate the medical community and general public so they may learn and accept that “it’s not only food that makes you fat”.

Many patients with fat disorders have gone undiagnosed for years, only to be told to lose weight, exercise, and/or seek psychological help therefore being denied medical care so desperately needed. . Our goal is that one day medical professionals will readily recognize the symptoms of Dercum’s Disease, Madelung’s Disease, Lipedema, Lymphedema, and Multiple Familial Lipomatosis, as well as the other fat disorders. Fat disorders research is currently inadequate and grossly underfunded.

The Fat Disorders Research Society, Inc. will be exploring all options to remedy this lack of funding.

The Fat Disorders Research Society, Inc. has no paid employees and is presently funded solely by individual contributors. Because we are a newly formed non-profit organization representing several ‘orphan diseases’, we face major challenges.  We need to spread awareness and secure funding for research through donations and grants. It is our hope that the Fat Disorders Research Society, Inc. will be a catalyst for awareness and research, through fundraising, an enthusiastic membership, and this website.

Fat Disorders Research Society, Inc. Board of Directors/Officers

President/Director Susan Grimshaw
Vice President Susan Smith
Treasurer Kristi Lowery
Secretary Carole Reed

We are currently a small board of directors, with all members being fat disorders patients. We are working to ‘grow’ our organization and are always open to suggestions and improvement.  One is not required to have a fat disorder to become a board member of FDRS. More important is the desire to help persons affected by fat disorders and the time to commit to doing so. We are currently a small board of directors, with all members being fat disorders patients.

Volunteers wishing to help may do so whether or not they intend to join the board of directors – we are always looking for enthusiastic individuals, particularly Medical Advisers. If you are interested in working with us, please send email to Susan Grimshaw.
